Why Time Management is Crucial in Entry Tests
In Pakistani entry tests like MDCAT, ECAT, and LAT, you have approximately 1-1.5 minutes per MCQ. Many students who know the answers still fail because they run out of time.
Time Allocation by Exam
- MDCAT: 200 MCQs in 210 minutes = ~1 minute per MCQ
- ECAT: 100 MCQs in 120 minutes = ~1.2 minutes per MCQ
- LAT: 100 MCQs in 120 minutes = ~1.2 minutes per MCQ
- IBA: 80 MCQs in 90 minutes = ~1.1 minutes per MCQ
10 Time Management Strategies
1. The 30-Second Rule
Decide within 30 seconds whether you know the answer. If you need to think, mark it and move on.
2. Easy Questions First
In the first pass, answer only questions you're 100% confident about. Then tackle medium, then hard questions.
3. Don't Get Stuck
If you're stuck after 1 minute, move on. One question is worth the same marks as any other.
4. Practice Under Timed Conditions
Always use a timer when practicing MCQs to build the speed habit.
5. Use Process of Elimination
Eliminate wrong options instead of finding the right answer. This is often faster and more reliable.
6. Watch Your Watch
For MDCAT: aim to complete 50 MCQs every 50 minutes. Check your progress at each checkpoint.
7. Negative Marking Strategy
If you can eliminate 2 out of 4 options, it's statistically worth guessing. If you can only eliminate 1, skip.
8. Keep 10 Minutes at the End
Reserve the last 10 minutes for reviewing marked questions and checking the bubble sheet.
